One of
the great things about visiting Boston is that you can see your history books
come to life.
"Old Ironsides" is a good place to
start.
It's the
only one of the six original frigates authorized by the Naval Act of 1794 that
still exists.
Its
legal name is actually the U.S.S. Constitution.
It was
launched in 1797, and was named by none other than George Washington.
Her
finest hour was the War of 1812.
When
shots from the HMS Guerriere bounced harmlessly off her hull, she earned her
nickname.
Old
Ironsides was decommissioned on June 14, 1855.
By 1907
it began serving as a museum.
These
days you can find it at the Charlestown Navy Yard. And it is well worth a visit.
Here's
a link to a previous blog about Boston...
Cheers!
