Mother’s Day in Central Park

NYC had great weather for Mother’s Day this year, so everyone headed for Central Park.

The tone was mostly mellow, if you don’t count the occasional traffic jam at the light.

Since it was fairly cool, the basketball, volleyball and baseball courts/fields were all full.

But who needs a ball field?

There was plenty of picnicking, book reading

and tree climbing going on as parents interacted with their kids.

Apparently this one was far less enthused about having his portrait sketched than his family was.

There was even some kite flying, although it wasn’t really breezy enough for that.

But the strangest sight was four beautifully curated picnic set-ups that were completely unoccupied.  People passing by wondered aloud about their significance.

One guessed that it might be a test to see if people would mess up the displays.  Perhaps.  Certainly no one touched them while I was there.  New Yorker’s can actually be considerate that way. Who knew? 😉

I hope all the moms had a great day!

Macy’s Flower Show

I guess it’s been a while since I went to the Macy’s Flower Show.

I see that the last time I posted a blog about it was in 2013.

Interestingly I commented on how difficult it was to photograph and instead just posted shots of the cool window reflections.

I got some interesting window shots this time too.  😉

But it would seem that somewhere along the way “the powers that be” realized that

perhaps displays that could be easily featured in Instagram selfies might be to their advantage,

even if they didn’t have many real flowers - or even any at all in some cases.

And, I imagine that plastic is cheaper than real flowers would be.

Definitely easier to care for.

Still, it left me wishing I had taken more photos of it when it truly was a flower show.

Tulips 6

I’m so crazy about tulips that I was surprised to see that I haven’t posted any new pics of them since 2019.

That may have had something to do with a fungus that was attacking tulips in the area.

I overheard the folks at Central Park saying they were going to have to take a year off and just plant daffodils.

I believe that Brooklyn Botanic Garden did the same.

And then – Covid.

But apparently the threat is over and the tulips are back in all their glory. (The orange ones glow!) 😉

These are from Brooklyn, my favorite place to photograph them -

now easier to get to thanks to the Q train.

Do you believe that this is a tulip?

Crazy.
