Collaboration with Tim #41: Billionaire’s Row

In 2015, One57 was completed and 57th Street between 5th and 8th Avenues was given a new nickname – Billionaire’s Row.

Of course, no one actually lives there despite the great views of Central Park.  They are merely investment properties for the rich and greedy.

I took this photo from the edge of the lake in the southeast corner of the park while some of the buildings were still works-in-progress.

And then Tim did his usual fabulous job of creating artwork from my photo.

It’s going to take me a while to adjust to the new skyline. 😉

Collaboration with Tim #40: Met Life Building

I took this photo during New York City’s phase one reopening following the Covid pandemic.  I was eager to get out of my apartment, but since there was no vaccine yet, public transportation was out, so I walked and took photos – many photos.

I was especially eager to capture this scene as I had never been able to photograph this view of The Met Life Building and Grand Central Station without cars in it.  But when I did, I found the result strangely depressing – like something out of a futuristic horror movie. (Several come to mind.)

NYC without people and traffic just isn’t NYC.

Tim’s take is very cheery though. 😊

Collaboration with Tim #39: Old Tree

This collaboration with Tim features “Old Tree” a sculpture by Pamela Rosenkranz currently on display on The High Line.

https://www.thehighline.org/art/projects/pamela-rosenkranz/

I went for a visit last September and posted this blog with pics…

I posted this edit on my Instagram…

And that was the view Tim chose to immortalize…

“Old Tree” will be on display until the fall, so there’s still time to check it out when you visit NYC. 😉

Collaboration with Tim #38: Book Cover

Typically, my collaborations with Tim begin when I post a photo on my Instagram feed or blog that captures his attention.  He then reaches out to request a jpeg and does his magic with it.

This time it was different.  I was writing a new book about communications entitled: “Speak First.  Repeat Often.  Don’t worry too much about the truth.”

I thought the chaos of Times Square – where multiple forms of communication are competing for attention would be an appropriate visual for the subject.  I asked Tim if he would be game and when he said he was, I sent him this photo.

He did his thing and provided me with a most awesome piece of art.  (Did I mention that ink with a watercolor wash is my favorite medium?)

And it was perfect on the book cover too.

Collaboration with Tim #37: Empire State Building

One of the coolest things about Manhattan is that it has lots of good angles.  You can be walking down a block and turn to see a classic NYC building – in this case the Empire State Building.

Other than the juxtaposition of angles, what caught my eye when I took this pic from 42nd Street was the flag.

Tim liked the subject, and the angles, so he came back with his version – which did not include the flag!  When I pointed out that the flag was one of my favorite things about the shot, he revised his work to include it.

What a great collaborator he is. 😉

Collaboration with Tim #35 – The Met roof

If you visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, aka The Met be sure to take a trip to the roof to check out the NYC skyline.  It’s very different now then it used to be, with the recent addition of the “Talls.”

It’s a pretty popular spot, so it’s always a challenge to get people-free pics.  Instead, I usually just try to minimize them and include only those who enhance, rather than diminish the photo.  I thought that this masked up couple fit the bill so I went for it.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that Tim opted to put more people in his version!!!  Different strokes for different folks as the saying goes.

Collaboration with Tim #33 – East 42nd Street

When people think about 42nd street, they typically think of Times Square which is on the west side of Manhattan.  But if you head east on 42nd street you’ll encounter some classic NYC views.  This pic was taken on 5th Avenue and 42nd And yes, that’s the Chrysler Building popping up in the background.

Since Tim likes clutter as much as I do, he decided to immortalize the scene in his typical fashion.  Sigh.  So beautiful.

Collaboration with Tim #33: Freedom Tower

Little Island is a great place to visit.  Not only is it adorable in and of itself, it has great views of lower Manhattan.  Since I visited in the summer, I took advantage of the opportunity to frame the Freedom Tower with some of its flowers.

The result caught Tim’s eye.  (He said it was the flowers that did it for him.😉 ) But he used his artistic license to turn the view into a vertical – which I much prefer.  Two points for analog!

Collaboration with Tim #31 – Palm Sunday on the UES

The Church of the Epiphany on the Upper East Side has a Palm Sunday procession every year, complete with bagpipes! 😊

Last year I happened to be outside when the procession went past and was able to capture this photo of the final participant waiting for the light to change so she could cross the street.

Tim liked the shot so much, he decided to immortalize it.  And that of course makes it extra special.

Collaboration with Tim #30 - The Met

The Met is my favorite indoor place in NYC.  (Central Park wins best outdoor.)  I visit frequently especially when it’s really cold or warm out.

My favorite time to go is in the evening on Friday and Saturday nights when it is open until 9:00.  Usually the tourists empty out by dinner time.

I took this photo a while back before they changed the fountains…

I took this photo on the roof during a day time visit.  I still can’t get used to the new midtown skyline.  And I imagine that by the time I do, it will have changed again. 😉

I worked very hard to minimize the human element, which wasn’t easy because the roof exhibits are very popular.

So, it made me smile when I saw that Tim had chosen to add more people to his take…

Here’s the final piece…

Collaboration with Tim #29 – Bethesda in snow

We haven’t had any snow to speak of in NYC this season.  We had just enough (.4 inch) for them to say that it had snowed on February 1st.  That’s a new record for the latest snowfall in NYC.  But since it barely coated the tree pits you could hardly call it a snow day.  You certainly could not go over to Central Park to take photos as I like to do.

Luckily, I have plenty in reserve from previous years. 😊

I took this photo in December 2020…

I tried my hardest to keep it people-free.  But even though it was early in the day and still snowing, it was difficult to get a shot without humans in it.  This was the best that I could do.

When Tim finished his recreation, he of course emphasized the very people I had been trying to minimize.  Ha. Ha.

I decided to combine his piece with several others to create a collage.  Since I took these photos a while back before Central Park got so popular, I was able to eliminate the humans.

I doubt that I will ever be able to get a shot of Bethesda Fountain without people in it again.

Here’s the final piece…
