Breaking in Times Square

The Olympics in Paris are wrapping up.

They had a new event this year – Breaking.

Apparently while it started in the Bronx it is now a world-wide phenomenon.

Proof positive – the gold medals were won by Phil Wizard from Canada and Ami from Japan.

Yes, they use their stage names when they compete.  How cool is that?

Victor for the U.S. did score a bronze medal.  Hats off to him.

I thought in honor of the occasion I would post a set of pics of some breakers in Times Square.

I lucked out and was close enough to both see and photograph them, and the crowds they attracted.

During the competition the announcers explained that one of the goals of the sport is to make sure that every pose they make is beautiful so that if you took a flash-freeze photo at any time it would look picturesque.

No wonder I love watching them.

Times Square at night

I rarely shoot at night.

But a while back we landed in Times Square at dusk and I was struck by how pretty it was

so I made a note to return with a better camera at some point.

Unfortunately I picked a balmy summer Saturday night to visit, so it was packed.

There was definitely a Disney vibe with lots tourists and babies in carriages.

And, it was so crowded it was a bit difficult to shoot.

I might have to try again when it’s a little cooler out.

Meanwhile though, I think the dusk pics were better than the night shots,

so I will need to keep that in mind too.

Collaboration with Tim #33 – East 42nd Street

When people think about 42nd street, they typically think of Times Square which is on the west side of Manhattan.  But if you head east on 42nd street you’ll encounter some classic NYC views.  This pic was taken on 5th Avenue and 42nd And yes, that’s the Chrysler Building popping up in the background.

Since Tim likes clutter as much as I do, he decided to immortalize the scene in his typical fashion.  Sigh.  So beautiful.

Here are some previous collaborations with Tim.  And you can follow us on Instagram at @pjlehrer and @timbaynes…

Times Square 7

Recently an acquaintance mentioned that she and her husband were staying in Times Square.
After explaining that she wasn’t actually seeing real New Yorkers or New York, but rather tourists, I thought I’d go by to check things out.
Traffic is still lighter than normal.
It shouldn’t be a surprise.
Based on what I have read, tourists are back at about 85% of previous levels. But not business people.
Offices in the area have not reopened so the population of locals who would help fill the restaurants has not bounced back.
Neither have the restaurants.
I was dismayed to read that Guv. Hochul is going all in on building more office space south of Times Square around Penn Station.
I had rather hoped for a different approach.
I think they should turn the entire area from 34th to 54th into a tourist haven and build not only more hotels but also affordable rentals for people who work in Times Square. But, hey. That’s just me.

Times Square 6

Although I avoided Times Square on New Year's Eve as I always do,

I did take a visit a short while back.

It was nice to see things picking up again.

Unfortunately thanks to Omicron we are currently going in reverse.

Hugh Jackman had to take a break from Music Man and several shows have had to close due to lack of healthy staff.

I wonder what January holds in store.

Meanwhile though, there was some good news.

I had read that Ellen's Stardust Diner was closing permanently in March 2020.  It appears that they had a change of heart.  That's nice.  It was a tourist favorite.

Overall I would say that NY has decided to vax/mask up and carry on.

It sure beats being locked in our apartments again.

Here are some other Times Square blogs...
