Embroidery: Peach Roses

I thought I’d stick with the roses theme to wrap up the month.  This embroidered piece, called Peach Roses, is my sister-in-law Judy’s favorite.

Here are the two watercolors I used in the collage.   The roses are from my roof garden, but they were actually pink, so I used some artistic license.

And I ended up editing out the smallest bud.

Rose Sculptures – Winter/Spring 2011

Last winter/spring Will Ryman’s flower sculptures brightened up Park Avenue,

blooming from January 25 – May 31.

Of course I went down on a nice day to see if I could get some good photos.

It proved to be challenging

because so little light actually filters down through the buildings even at mid-day.

It also kept shifting so I had to keep moving back and forth across the street to take advantage of the light at that particular moment.

It was worth the effort though.

They really were adorable and the juxtaposition with the towers surrounding them was pure NYC.

Here’s a link to Will Ryman’s installation website so you can see more of his work.

Amherst Roses

I love flowers.

I love growing them

and I love using them in my artwork.

Although I live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in a co-op,

I am still able to pursue my passion for gardening because we have a beautiful roof garden in my building.

I have to admit that it is my pride and joy and I have been gradually transforming it by adding more flowers every year.

We now have a lovely collection of roses.

We have a variety of purple and pink hybrid teas in the west garden.

While in the south garden we have wild red roses mixed with orange lilies.

There are even a couple of miniature rose bushes in the north entryway.  Luckily they are far enough out that they are getting enough sun to bloom happily each June.

Embroidery: Autumn: A Self-Portrait

In honor of my upcoming birthday on February 13th, I thought I’d post this self-portrait.

A special thanks goes to Edward for taking the headshot that I used in the piece.

The theme was inspired by the wonderful movie Lion In Winter.  It earned Katharine Hepburn one of her four best actress Oscars.  Rent it on Netflix!
