Knicks in 5 😊

The NY Knicks winning their first NBA Championship in 53 years deserves some recognition.

This piece began with a cartoon from Avi Steinberg. (Instagram: @steinbergdrawscartoons)  It was too cute to pass up.

Then I added a watercolor of Manhattan by Tim Baynes (Instagram: @timbaynesartist)

And a photo of a blue and orange sunset from Lake Wynonah in PA.

Here’s the composite.

When I added the embroidery, it only seemed right to feature the Empire State Building as was wearing the Knicks colors throughout the finals.

Burren Illuminated

This month’s piece from the Illuminated Ireland series features a photo of a dolmen (Neolithic tomb) in The Burren.

Located in County Claire, the area’s name comes from the Irish word “Boirinn” which means rocky district.  Despite its name and appearance, 70% of Ireland’s flower species can be found here.

This is the original photo…

The letter “B” drawing…

And the collage.

Another photo of the final version.

It’s a college town full of life and fun.  And the oysters were to die for.  Here’s the original photo…

Craggaunowen Illuminated

This month’s piece from the Illuminated Ireland series features a photo of a crannog.

People first began building crannogs – dwellings on artificial islands - during the Neolithic period.  Crannog ruins in Ireland have been dated 1200 – 600 B.C.

Much to my surprise, I was recently watching a tv show about Scotland and some popped up.  As it turns out, they can be found in Wales as well.

This reconstruction can be found in Craggaunowen…

Which also has a cute little castle, so it’s well worth a visit.

Here’s the drawing of the illuminated letter C. ( I thought a sea creature would be appropriate.)

And, the photoshop combination ready for printing on linen.

Here’s another photo of the final version.

Kilkea Rose embroidery

This piece from the embroidered Ireland series features a rose from the backyard of Kilkea Castle.

The castle is a family favorite - Edward visited in 1968 and we stayed there together in 2001.  I felt like a princess.

Here’s the photo of the rose…

The drawing of the illuminated letter K…

And, the photoshop combination ready for printing –

I thought a pink tint would be fun.

Here’s another photo of the final version.

Glendalough Illuminated

This is the first piece in an embroidery series inspired by our trip to Ireland in July 2001 and the beauty of Irish illuminated manuscripts.

For the background I combined two photographs taken at Glendalough – the place where the Irish saved civilization.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glendalough

https://www.amazon.com/How-Irish-Saved-Civilization-Irelands/dp/0385418493

Then I drew an illuminated “G” based on a classic design.

Combined it looked like this.  Then I printed it on linen, and added the embroidery.

Here’s the finished piece again.

Embroidery: The Kiss

Klimt’s painting “The Kiss” is a study in beauty, so it’s no wonder that so many artists riff on it.  I am no exception.

When Edward and I got engaged in 1987, we headed over to Central Park to take some photos.  Apparently, while we were setting up this one, we attracted a crowd.  They clapped when we kissed and I couldn’t help laughing – hence the body language.

Given that our positioning was so similar to those in Klimt’s kiss I started thinking about ways I could pay homage to the original.  First, I replaced the background with bigger azaleas.

Then I needed a way to combine the foreground and background, so I added a shot from NASA.  After all, he does make me see stars. 😉

I have to admit that I was so taken with the result at this point that I hesitated to add embroidery.

But my goal was to create an embroidered piece, so I forged ahead.

Only to admit to myself that I liked it better before I added the embroidery.  And, it didn’t really look much like Klimt’s kiss.

I realized that it needed to be gold for the inspiration to be obvious, so I turned to photoshop.

And then I decided that it was too complicated, so a close-up would be better.  And so, it is.

Here’s to the next 38 years.
