Erte pen & ink

As with many of my drawings this one was done to be part of another piece of art.  But, since it's so pretty on its own, I thought I'd share it.

Grant Wood @ the Whitney

Today was the last day to see the Grant Wood exhibit at the Whitney Museum.  

It’s a shame if you didn’t get a chance to check it out because it was definitely worth a visit.  

Not surprisingly he was a great artist.  

They included some of his early work in the exhibit and this example of his “impressionist” phase shows how talented he is in that style. 

I was also quite taken with this piece, which reminds me of a Norman Rockwell.  Apparently he did it in the hopes of getting a WPA commission – which he did not get.

Of course there was a crowd gathered around American Gothic.  But it was actually the least interesting painting in the show since it is so overexposed. 

What I was interested in seeing was his landscape work because I love The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, which The Met loaned for the exhibit.  It’s still my favorite.

But I loved so many of the others too.  Cartoonish, but not really.  Just highly stylized.  

It was interesting to note that most of the pieces came from collections in Midwest museums.  This one belongs to William Koch. 

Clearly he has a good eye.
