Butterflies for Kenny #1

In February 2018, I published Butterflies for Kenny, a coloring book that I created for my brother Kenny.  It's available online if you want to buy a copy and play along.  After you color, you can post your art on Instagram at #butterfliesforkenny.  So far, I've gotten two people to play - thanks Sheila and Kat :-).

This is my first page - Butterfly #1.  

As you can see, I color both inside and outside of the lines, and encourage others to do so too. ;-)  This page was inspired by 60's psychedelic art - always a personal favorite.

Norman Rockwell 2

I was so taken with Norman Rockwell after seeing the exhibit at the New-York Historical Society that I decided to post a second set of photos. 

Although he raised millions for World War II with his Four Freedom posters, he declined a request to do posters for the Vietnam War.  

Instead, he turned around and did this piece - The Right To Know - focusing on citizens right to know what their government is doing.  Hmm.

The exhibit included some tidbits about his process.  

(Don't you just love those?)  

Apparently once he decided on a composition, he would draw the full size design on the canvas, and then photograph it.  

Then he would work out his color palette on the photograph.  I love that.

This is an alternative version of The Right to Know.  If you compare it to the final you can see that he created greater intimacy by changing the gaze of the people in the piece to focus on the audience.  Very eerie effect.

I am seriously contemplating going down to take a second look at the exhibit.  

It's open until September 2 just in case you want to take a look too.
