It's finally here!
After nine years of annoying construction clogging up the neighborhood,
the Second Avenue subway opened on January 1, 2017.
Of course since they began discussing it in 1920 it was
long overdue.
Back in 2007 when they first broke ground they had intended
to build an entirely new line running on Second Ave from the Bronx to the tip
of Manhattan. But at some point they
realized they did not have enough money for that.
So they decided to run an extension of the Q line up Second
Avenue with stops at 72, 86 & 96.
That's even better for us.
Not only does it halve the time it takes us to walk to the
subway, but we can now get to Times Square in 7 minutes - 11 if you count the 4
minutes that I waited for the train to come.
That's amazing.
For the past 34 years that I have lived in on the Upper
East Side it has been a pain to get to Times Square, requiring two subways (or
buses) and at least 30 - 40 minutes.
And
cabs take just as long, but cost more.
I'm so excited I can barely contain myself. :-)
Cheers!
