LES murals

I’ve wanted to photograph the murals that line east Houston Street for years - ever since we rode past in a cab a while back.

So, when I decided that I wanted to check out the pickles at The Pickle Guy,

I brought my camera along and allowed some additional time for the trip.

Lucky for me, they were still there.

And just as pretty as I remembered.

It’s a good neighborhood for murals.

In addition to the string that caught my eye,

there were other interesting examples scattered about the hood.

In fact, I think the prettiest one might be the one that greeted me as I left the subway station.

Oh, and the pickles were worth the trip. 😉

Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana’s “LOVE” statue has lived on 6th Avenue & 55th Street for as long as I can remember.  I’ve photographed people there of course. 😉

Apparently it was whisked away for refurbishing during Covid, and now has returned to NYC where it is visiting Rockefeller Center until October 23rd.

In addition to the LOVE sculpture Indiana’s sculpture “ONE Through ZERO (The Ten Numbers) ” is also on display.

The Number sculptures were originally executed between 1980 and 1983.

Each number represents a different phase of a person’s life from birth until death –

starting with one, ending with zero.

Indiana credited his enduring interest in numbers to the formative experience of moving households multiple times as a child,

having lived in twenty-one different homes by the age of seventeen.

“Numbers fill my life,” the artist once said.

“They fill my life even more than love.”

“We are immersed I numbers from the moment we are born.”

Cheers!

Old Tree

Pamela Rosenkranz’s sculpture “Old Tree” is currently on display at the High Line.

Since it doesn’t have a bad angle, I thought I’d devote an entire blog to it. 😉

Of course, it’s actually the same from every angle. It’s the surroundings that change!

There are ultra-modern skyscrapers of course.

And old-school warehouses from the neighborhood’s previous life.

Framed by plants.

Featuring the High Line.

Empire State Building.

Even a reflection.

Definitely worth a visit.

Carole A. Feuerman on Park Avenue South

As soon as the weather starts to get nice, my thoughts turn to outdoor art.

Typically exhibits in NYC only last about six months so there’s a clock ticking.

As soon as I saw some photos of Carole A. Feuerman’s sculptures, currently on display on Park Avenue South between 34th and 38th Streets, I knew I had to go check them out.

Since they feature swimmers, they really speak to me!

Edward always says that good sculpture looks good from all angles.  These definitely passed that test.

Of course, they were getting some attention from the natives,

or not. 😉

Some of the sculptures sit on mirrored balls that reflect the passing traffic.

And The MetLife Building makes a lovely background.

They are definitely worth a visit and they are on display through the end of the year, so there’s still plenty of time.

“HERE” by Santi Flores P2

Hands down my favorite outdoor art display in Manhattan this year is Santi Flores’s “HERE” exhibit in the garment district.

So I decided to post a second set of photos before the exhibit wraps on October 23rd.

Do make an effort to see it.

You can find it in the Garment District – 14 sculptures between 38th and 41st Streets.

The fact that it is so compact definitely makes it easier to see them all.

And there are plenty of seats in the neighborhood in case you want to enjoy them while you lunch.

The exhibit symbolizes unity, diversity and individualism.

Very NYC.

And, Santi’s theme - “We are moving forward together” seems particularly appropriate as the pre-Covid crowds have come back to Manhattan.

He also seems to be selling mini-versions. How cool is that?
