One of the reasons that I like living on the Upper East
Side is because it's so pretty.
In fact, the
neighborhood brownstones are so lovely
that in 1981 the Upper East Side Historic District was
created to protect them.
In 2010 the district was extended a bit more to the east to
its current parameters.
So now it runs from 59th Street to 78th Street - between
Fifth Avenue and Park, Lexington or Third, depending upon the block.
Within the district there are 22 buildings that are
designated on their own, so it's an architecture lovers paradise.
The buildings were constructed in several phases.
From 1860 - 1880 the Italianate and Greek Revival styles
were most popular.
While from 1880 - 1910, the Beaux-Arts and French
Renaissance styles dominated.
They're all worth a look on your next visit.
Cheers!
