In
honor of International Woman's Day,
Central
Park posted a photo of Angel of the Waters on Instagram.
The
statue was designed by Emma Stebbins.
Dedicated
in 1873, it was the first time a woman was given a commission for a major work
of art in the city of New York.
It was
built to commemorate the 1842 opening of the Croton Aqueduct.
That
system included a receiving reservoir where the Great Lawn is now,
and
ended at the Croton Reservoir, where The NY Public Library and Bryant Park are
now.
As
with all great 3-D pieces the statue looks terrific from every angle.
A fact
which is highlighted by these cloudy day pics I took back in the 80's.
But
the thing I like most about the piece is the way it dances on the tree tops.
A few
more Central Park blogs...
Cheers!
