Pompeii
was in the news this week.
I was
pleased to see that a campaign to save the site was begun in 2011. Sadly it was in response to the collapse of
the House of the Gladiators in 2010. But
better late than never.
It
would be a shame to lose Pompeii. It's a
magical place.
Stunning
in its size, even though only 2/3 of the site has been excavated.
It's a
complete city - private homes, stores,
public squares and the occasional poor soul.
Apparently
the restoration has gone well and by the end of 2017, 37 buildings and streets
had been opened/reopened.
But
since the focus has been on preserving rather than finding, a new discovery was
unexpected.
In
fact, they were stabilizing the city walls when they found it.
Which
brings us back to the big news. They
found a new street with two houses containing some fabulous murals. One with a couple of snakes. Looks like a good reason to visit again. :-)
