Green-Wood Cemetery 2

In addition to being a historical site, Green-Wood is of course the site of many famous burials.

Leonard Bernstein, who was born on August 25, 1918, snagged himself a really good spot not far from the Civil War Monument.
BTW, he died on October 14, 1990 in The Dakota on the UWS.
Other famous residents whose graves we did not stumble upon included Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Boss Tweed.
Maybe next time.
I should also probably check out who was responsible for this pyramid.
They have a really interesting website which mentions all kinds of programs.
Today is “Battle of Brooklyn Day.” It’s billed as a family-friendly event with costumed characters and colonial music.
That sounds a lot more appealing to me than next month’s event – Death Café on Zoom.
Different strokes for different folks. ;-)
Here’s a previous Green-Wood Cemetery blog…

Green-Wood Cemetery

Visiting cemeteries isn't usually on my "things to do" list.

But when I heard that Green-Wood in Brooklyn is a national historic site my interest picked up.

Turns out it's the site of the Battle of Brooklyn!  That means George Washington was there. :-)

The Battle of Brooklyn was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War and the U.S. lost.  But Washington and the army escaped across the East River under the cover of darkness and lived to fight another day.

At 216 feet, Battle Hill is highest point in Brooklyn.

Even though I knew that before we headed out on the R train I hadn't counted on the views which were magnificent.

They included the Statue of Liberty,

the Freedom Tower and lower Manhattan,

and even The Empire State Building and midtown.

The view is so pretty, we may have to go back to visit again in the fall.

Cheers!
