UES Halloween at night

This year I finally managed to shoot Halloween decorations at night.

And it was a mob scene.

I probably shouldn’t be surprised since the Upper East Side has become Instagram famous for their decorations.

Probably TikTok too.

Someone posting on Instagram mentioned that there were 30+ buildings decorated on the UES.

I would imagine that they have undercounted.

They fall within a roughly two mile square so catching them all can be quite exhausting.

The same person also mentioned that most of the buildings would be decorating for the holidays as well.

No pressure there.

And next year, Halloween falls on a Saturday.  I can hardly wait. 😉

Halloween in the hood - 2025 edition

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday.

So, I just love the fact that my hood has turned into the go-to-place for over-the-top decorations in Manhattan.

When people began posting photos and addresses from last year on Instagram, I was a bit concerned.

What if these folks didn’t feel like decorating this year?

Worse yet, what if they moved?

If they did, I sure hope they told the people who bought their houses what was expected of them.

Can you imagine what it would be like to have bunches of disappointed people stalking your house?

When I saw a pic of this set up online, I just had to go check it out.  (60 East 85th St.)  It’s going to be hard to beat.

Meanwhile 78th Street between Park and 2nd is particularly festive.  Apparently, they have a block party planned.

I may just have to crash. 😉

Halloween in Narberth PA

As a Halloween lover, I really lucked out this year.  I got to see decorations in three states!  North Carolina, New York and Pennsylvania.

Awesome.

The only thing that would have been better would have been to go trick-or-treating in all three.  Something for the bucket list.😊

These pics are from Narberth, PA.

It’s adjacent to Merion – where my brother lives – but the houses are closer together so it’s a better Halloween destination.

It was particularly lovely because of the fall foliage.

Is this a disappointed Phillies fan?

I guess if you are going to convert an old church into your home, you are obligated to do an especially impressive decorating job.

There were a surprising amount of witches smashing into trees – we agreed that the sign made this one the best.  (Don’t text and fly)

And given the timing and location, there were a fair amount of Harris/Waltz signs.  I took it as a good omen.

Halloween in the hood – 2024: p2

The Upper East Side of Manhattan has outdone itself with Halloween decorations this year.

The set of photos I posted previously featured homes between 61st Street and 72nd Street.

These photos were taken between 73rd Street and 84th Street.

You need to zig and zag across the side streets to see everything, so by the time I got to 84th Street three hours had passed.

At that point, I decided to go home instead of venturing further north.

Since I took the photos on a Sunday (October 20th) I was joined by many locals and their offspring/out-of-town guests.

The houses did not disappoint.

Now some have decided to extend their efforts into the trees in front of their homes as well.

And just like any New Yorker would the spectators wondered out loud - “How do they get into their house?”

As for me, I wondered what it must be like to put up such an elaborate show just to be outdone by the neighbors.

Halloween in the Hood – 2024

Someone on Instagram pointed out that this Halloween the Upper East Side clearly understood the assignment.

It’s true that the decorations in the hood are rising to new heights.

I’m sure that social media is part of the reason why.

People post their favorite finds so others can check them out too.

I remembered some of the key places from last year but it didn’t hurt to have some reminders.

The best part is that those who decorate are so into it that they generally do something different every year for repeat visitors.

Since certain blocks are particularly noteworthy, I suspect that complicity is involved.

The folks on 92nd Street even host a yearly block party.

But there’s also a competitive aspect as people try to outdo their neighbors.

As I was photographing this place a child walked by with his mom.  I overheard him saying: “Can you imagine what it would be like if you had never visited NYC before and you came and saw this?”

Too true.
