A few years ago, NYC introduced some ferries into the transportation mix. Last week I checked out the Astoria line.
It zigzags across the East River for a leisurely 52 minutes.
I picked it up at its first stop on 90th Street. From there it goes to Astoria. Then the east side of Roosevelt Island, Long Island City, 34th Street and finally Wall Street.
At that point there are several options for additional ferries including Rockaway, Coney Island and Williamsburg.
Meanwhile though, the Astoria route provides the perfect opportunity to take photos of the Manhattan skyline.
After years of remaining pretty much the same it's now changing rapidly. New tall buildings stick up above the Empire State Building and Chrysler Buildings, which are slowly becoming invisible.
I took a different cruise line back - the Soundview line, which ends in the Bronx.
It stops at Stuyvesant Town, 34th Street and then 90th before going to Soundview. The trip from Wall Street to 90th takes 35 minutes so it's faster, but still pretty darn picturesque.
I'm looking forward to taking more ferry rides in the future.
At $2.75 a trip they're a real bargain. And it would be fun to photograph the Manhattan skyline at sunset. ;-)
Cheers!
