Rocking the Rubin

The Rubin Museum of Art is closing in October 2024.

At that point they will begin loaning their collection to museums throughout the world for special exhibitions rather than having a permanent location.

Since I had never been there, I decided to check it out before it closed.

The museum founded by Donald and Shelley Rubin,

features the Himalayan Art that they collected beginning in the 1970’s.

Shortly after the museum opened in 2004, in the location previously occupied by Barney’s Chelsea, the Dalai Lama came to visit and thank the couple for their efforts.

In addition to the historical art on display they also have some modern art from the region on display.

This piece made great use of the atrium space and was pretty from every floor.

But the designs on this one made it my favorite.

It’s open Thursdays – Sundays if you want to check it out before it closes.

Ciao

Upper East Side Construction 2

The construction continues in the neighborhood.

Sad to say, I don’t see it wrapping up any time soon.

And next week we are due to have our first heat wave.  It won’t be pretty.

Luckily a cottage industry has sprung up supplying the construction workers in the neighborhood with food and drinks.

Here’s a building wrapping up on the outside.

But then they still have to add electric and plumbing and walls.

Well, if you watch HGTV you know.

These two buildings are practically on top of each other – with a holdout in between.  I am sure that there is an interesting story there.

I am pleased to report that when the crane on York Avenue left it did not wake me.

So, we’re making progress.

This collaboration with Tim features “Old Tree” a sculpture by Pamela Rosenkranz currently on display on The High Line.

I went for a visit last September and posted this blog with pics…

I posted this edit on my Instagram…

And that was the view Tim chose to immortalize…

“Old Tree” will be on display until the fall, so there’s still time to check it out when you visit NYC. 😉

Venice 4 – Access Fee Alert

I’ve heard Venice referred to as an open-air museum, so I guess it makes sense that On April 25th, 2024 Venice began charging day trippers a daily entry fee to visit the city.

It’s $5.45 per person for anyone entering between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm on 29 days (mostly weekends) running through July 14th, 2024.

The hope of course is that it will enable them to get their tourism under control.

I’m not surprised to hear that they had to resort to such drastic measures.

These photos were taken in May 2005, when tourism was much lighter, but you can see that the most popular places were already becoming over run in what was still the off-season (but no longer is.)

Because I spent a week in town I could, and did, get up early to see the tourist favorites before they got too crowded.  Now I wonder if that’s even possible.

Of course that’s an even better excuse to lengthen your visit.

The off-beat views are equally spectacular

or quaint – take your pick.

And if you stay a while you won’t have to pay a Venice Access Fee. 😉
