Central Park White Out - P3

Central Park was created in 1858 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.

It is 843 acres - 2.5 miles long by ½ mile wide – running from 59th Street to 110th Street.

42 million people visit Central Park every year.

It’s a tale of two cities.

Belvedere Castle on 59th Street is the dividing line.

From the castle south – tourists.  Lots of tourists.

North of the castle – locals.

While the tourists were slipping on Bow Bridge –

locals were walking, sometimes with others, sometimes with dogs.

And, in the afternoon, the parents with kids and sleds arrived.

Central Park NYC has something for everyone!

Central Park White Out - 12/14/25: P2

We got more snow in NYC on December 26th.  (Not as pretty as last week though, so these pics are from the 14th.)

I guess whoever predicted that NYC was going to have a snowy winter was correct.

This time we got 4.3 inches.

It’s the first time since January 2022 that we have gotten over 4 inches.

But it didn’t compare to some of the big storms we have gotten in the past.

95/96 was NYC’s snowiest winter ever.

We had 75.6 inches.

Other notable seasons include 1947/1948 – 63.8 inches

And 1960/1961 – 54.7 inches.

2011 was notable because we had our snowiest January ever and it was epic. – 36 inches.

Here’s a great chart showing all of NYC’s snow totals since 1868…

Central Park white out – 12/14/25

I have been photographing Central Park for over 40 years.

Every winter I wish for one good snow day so that I can visit the park and capture its beauty.

Since we rarely have snow in December, and we haven’t had much the past few years,  I was a bit skeptical when the weather reports predicted snow last Sunday.

But, it did snow.

And, when I arrived at the park, I was truly stunned.

Crossing 5th Avenue was like entering a mystical portal to a frozen winter wonderland.

Since I was on the UES I could hear all the locals saying the same thing – I have never seen the park look like this.

My best guess is that the overnight/early morning sleet coated the branches, so when snow started to fall it stuck.

And while it was still snowing when I arrived, it stopped soon after and then the sun came in and out in some weird ways.

I think that the only one who enjoyed the day more than me, was this young lady – who shrieked with joy every time she went down the hill on her sled.  Too cute.

Here’s a blog from February 2014, which was the only other time that we came this close to peak pretty…

Central Park – 2/13/24

Just when I was beginning to think we were going to have yet another snow-free winter, my birthday wish came true.

Central Park got 3.1 inches of snow.

Not as much as I had hoped, and they had predicted 5-8 inches, but still pretty enough to go to the park and play. 😊

It was a wet snow so snowmen activity was visible everywhere.  And, the competition was so fierce that people were forced to step up their game.

The Fashionistas were also out, photographers in tow - showing off their best outfits.

In short, everyone was having a great time.  I did wonder a bit about the heavy kid presence since it was supposed to be a school day.

But apparently, they tried to go remote and failed!  Go NYC!!!

Happy kids. Unhappy adults.

I’m still hoping for an even bigger and prettier snow before the season ends, but the forecast does not look encouraging.

 Still, you never know.

Central Park – Winter 2022 p3

NYC finally got some snow this week.

It had been 701 days since our last measurable snowfall, and that one was only ~ one inch so it was nothing to shout about.

The same thing happened this week – barely over an inch.  So disappointing!

And our second round later in the week turned out to be merely flurries.

Not a lot of snowman potential there.

It’s too bad because it is clear that everyone is wishing for a fun snow day to go over to the park and play.

But, since it’s in the 20’s today, I thought that rather than freezing my butt off for mediocre photos I would post another set from our last really pretty snow in January 2022.

It was a beauty.

But I haven’t given up hope for this year yet.  It is still January.

Too bad it’s due to go up to the 50’s next week.
