Even though they may look like lilies, sometimes -
Canna Lilies aren't really lilies at all.
They're actually closer to banana plants.
They are natives of the Americas,
one of the earliest cultivated plants in North America
going back thousands of years.
Because you can eat their starchy roots.
They are happy just about any place they can get 6 - 8
hours of sunlight a day,
and can actually be an invasive species in tropical
climates.
But in temperate climates they are annuals instead of
re-blooming perennials.
That's probably why I'm not seeing them too much in
Manhattan anymore.
