For The Birds 2

So far I haven’t found any outdoor art exhibits in NYC this summer that speak to me.

So I thought I’d post another set of pics from last year’s birdhouse exhibit at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

I had forgotten how creative they were.

On the website they pay tribute to the artists.

They also give advice on “how to become a birder.”

Hmm.  I would have thought it was self-explanatory.

They auctioned off roughly half of the houses after the exhibit ended but I was unable to find out how much money they brought in.

Hopefully it was enough to keep the gardens happy.

Meanwhile, in Manhattan these days all the birding attention is on Flaco – the owl who escaped from the Central Park Zoo last spring, who is currently enjoying his freedom in Central Park – but not as much as the local birders are enjoying watching him.

I may just have to join them one of these days.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden - Birdhouses 2

Now that it is cold out and the trees are ugly, I find myself yearning for spring.  That sure didn’t take long. 😊

Luckily I have another set of photos from last summer at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, when they had their pretty birdhouse exhibit.

A great idea, well executed.

They sprinkled the birdhouses throughout the garden to draw people to parts they might not normally visit.

The map helped me to find many of them, although some still eluded me.

Here’s a link to photos of them all… https://www.bbg.org/feature/birdhouses

I did get to see this cool apartment house.

And this one wins the award for prettiest location.

They’ll be a hard act to follow.

I wonder what the folks at the garden will think of next.

For the Birds

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has gone to the birds. Literally.
I’m not surprised, as I too developed a fondness for birdwatching during the phased re-openings after Covid lockdown.

Of course, I do my birdwatching at Central Park. But I could tell that BBG is just as good a spot to observe their comings and goings.

To encourage the hobby the garden commissioned a bunch of birdhouses from various artists.

When the exhibit ends on October 23rd, they will go to the highest bidders.

And to make it easier for visitors to locate the birdhouses they are handing out free maps. That’s right. Actual maps.

They do of course have an app as well. But I suspect they were thinking that many visitors would be Boomers who prefer hard copy to digital.

They were certainly right about me.

And trying to find all the houses using the map was like going on a treasure hunt. Lots of fun. Even though I couldn’t find them all.

They are also offering free birding walks on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am – 12 pm. It could be worth checking out if you live close by.

But even if you don’t, I would recommend scheduling a visit before the exhibit ends. It is worth the trip.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden - Earth Day 2022

It's been a cold rainy spring in NYC.

But it was nice on Earth Day so I headed out to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

They made some improvements during my  two year covid break.

A new section with intimate seating caught my eye.

They have definitely added more seating over the past few decades so I guess many people like to come and stay a while.

I get that.

They also added a lovely meandering path in the hillside overlooking the cherry and rose gardens.

It's stroller/wheelchair friendly and great for photography - a twofer.

Thanks to the chilly weather, not much was blooming yet.

That meant that the trees that were blooming had lots of fans. :-)
