For The Birds 2

So far I haven’t found any outdoor art exhibits in NYC this summer that speak to me.

So I thought I’d post another set of pics from last year’s birdhouse exhibit at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

I had forgotten how creative they were.

On the website they pay tribute to the artists.

They also give advice on “how to become a birder.”

Hmm.  I would have thought it was self-explanatory.

They auctioned off roughly half of the houses after the exhibit ended but I was unable to find out how much money they brought in.

Hopefully it was enough to keep the gardens happy.

Meanwhile, in Manhattan these days all the birding attention is on Flaco – the owl who escaped from the Central Park Zoo last spring, who is currently enjoying his freedom in Central Park – but not as much as the local birders are enjoying watching him.

I may just have to join them one of these days.

Here is a link to the previous blog from the exhibit…

Birdhouses on 83rd Street

A few weeks ago a misguided person took down all the pretty birdhouses on 81st Street in the dead of night and threw them in the trash that was removed before everyone woke up the next morning.

Outrage ensued.

The woman defended her actions by saying the houses were hurting the trees.  Really?

If she really cared about the trees then she would be going after the people who let their dogs pee on them.  Now that kills trees.

In any case when I was reading about the incident I found out that there were some birdhouses on 83rd street between York and First Avenue.

I figured that I had better photograph them immediately before they too are vandalized.

They are a bit more rustic than the ones on 81st Street were.

But still very photogenic and fun to look at.

Meanwhile back on 81st Street plans are afoot to replace the birdhouses and get a permit from the city so if they are removed again, there will be fines to pay.

I'll definitely be looking out for them when they reappear.

In the meantime, here's a link to the blog about them.
