Green-Wood Cemetery 2

In addition to being a historical site, Green-Wood is of course the site of many famous burials.

Leonard Bernstein, who was born on August 25, 1918, snagged himself a really good spot not far from the Civil War Monument.
BTW, he died on October 14, 1990 in The Dakota on the UWS.
Other famous residents whose graves we did not stumble upon included Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Boss Tweed.
Maybe next time.
I should also probably check out who was responsible for this pyramid.
They have a really interesting website which mentions all kinds of programs.
Today is “Battle of Brooklyn Day.” It’s billed as a family-friendly event with costumed characters and colonial music.
That sounds a lot more appealing to me than next month’s event – Death Café on Zoom.
Different strokes for different folks. ;-)
Here’s a previous Green-Wood Cemetery blog…

A visit to The Met.

It’s been so hot out this summer that we started thinking about indoor activities.
The Met was first on our list so we headed over.
Not surprisingly it was crowded.
I know that’s good for The Met and NYC since they were mostly tourists – hopefully spending lots of money.
Whenever I give tourists directions, which happens frequently, I always wrap up by saying: “Have fun. Spend lots of money.”
To which someone once replied: “We already have!”
The highlight exhibit during our visit was a collection of Winslow Homer works. Upon viewing it you can easily see that his seascapes were his jam.
I always make it a point to check out the drawings. On this visit I was rewarded with a Van Gogh. :-)
But perhaps the newest strange thing was the painted statues – reproductions of Greek originals showing what they looked like when they were painted.
Not nearly as majestic as when they are all white. ;-)
That’s it for now! Cheers, PJ

Collaboration with Tim #25 – South Street Seaport

The South Street Seaport is currently being transformed from its previous incarnation as a tourist spot to an upscale mall. Some of the ships that were parked there, which were available for visiting have been sent elsewhere.

Here’s a pic of The Peking. In August 2016 it sailed back to its place of origin – Hamburg and it is now on view at the Hamburg Maritime Museum. I’m glad that I got lots of photos of it when I did. It is very picturesque.
Then Tim took this pic of the seaport which I took from a boat…

And turned it into another awesome work of art…

Which I then used to create this mash-up…
You can follow me and Tim on Instagram at @pjlehrer and @timbaynes.
And if you press the label at the bottom of the blog, all of our collaborations will pop up.
Enjoy!

U.S. Botanic Garden 4

It's so hot this summer that the best chance to see flowers is probably by visiting greenhouses.

If you are in the Washington D.C. area I would highly recommend the U.S. Botanic Garden.

It has a lovely collection of orchids,

and a pretty pond surrounded by lilies.

They encourage people to take casual photos for their personal use.

That's always a big plus in my book.

For those of us who don't live in the area,

they have a virtual tour on their website!

Very cool.
