Vintage Macy’s Parade – 2000

Since I didn’t go to the Thanksgiving Parade this year,

I thought I’d post another set of photos from 2000.

The year I had the great view

and even better turkey.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving parade started in 1926.

Which makes it the second oldest Thanksgiving Day parade in the U.S.

The oldest is Gimbel’s Thanksgiving parade in Philadelphia,

which debuted in 1920.

You don’t need to be a math genius to realize that next year will be the 100th anniversary of the Macy’s parade.

Wow.  That’s definitely something to look forward to.

Mermaid Parade 2025 – p2

As promised, here’s a second set of pics from this year’s edition of the Mermaid Parade.

Comparing it to 2023 ( I skipped last year)

It seemed to me that there was more nudity.

And yet, it was still very much a family event.

Check out this adorable mommy and me sea horse duo.

That makes it a great example of people getting along.

Of course, someone just had to bring up the pizza rat.

But lots of pretty mermaids made up for it,

Not to mention the octopus finale.

Till next year…

Here are the previous posts of the parade…

Mermaid Parade 2025 p1

I was watching an old episode of CSI:NY the other day, and someone asked what the Mermaid Parade was.

Mac’s reply – “It’s the annual whack fest held in Coney Island kicking off the summer season.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

It’s the ultimate NYC experience – fun, inclusive and very weird.

No wonder it’s my favorite parade.

Mermaids abound of course.

But so do sea creatures of various types.

That gives most people enough room to stay on theme but still show off their creativity.

Still some, like the Weiner Sisters with their tribute to Nathan’s – yes those are hot dog buns in their hair and hot dogs on their dresses - go a bit off course.

And others… Well let’s just say that I love the look but I’m having trouble finding the connection to the sea.

I’ll post a second set of pics in a couple of weeks.  Meanwhile, here are some from 2023…

Easter Parade 2

I had so many great photos from the Easter Parade that I thought I’d post a second set.

The Easter parade began in the 1880’s, and by 1900, Easter was as important in retailing as Xmas season is today.

In 1933, Irving Berlin wrote “Easter Parade.”  In 1948, the movie was released.

The parade peaked in 1947 with over one million participants.

It is still an informal and unorganized event.  How NYC!

Anyone can join – they just need to show up – preferably in awesome costumes and hats.

The parade had historic roots in Easter processions which have been part of Christian culture since its earliest beginnings.

But it lost its religious significance somewhere along the way.

In fact, there is an old Irish adage – “For Christmas, food and drink; for Easter, new clothes.”

And there was a Tudor superstition (1485) that unless a person had a new homespun cloth available at easter, moths and crickets would eat the old goods.  (No mention of dogs though.)

Easter Parade

I finally made it to NYC’s Easter Parade this year.

Sort of.

I had read that it was running from 10 am to 4 pm.

Since it was cool in the morning, I thought I would catch the end of the parade when it would be warmer out.

But when I arrived at 57th street at 3:00 I saw cars instead of people on 5th Avenue.  Oh no.

I’m still not sure what happened.

But I headed toward St. Patrick’s which is the epicenter of the event.

And when I got there, I could see there were still plenty of people with outrageous hats posing on the steps.

Cool.

Later I saw this photo of the crowds during the actual parade and realized that my late arrival was fortuitous.

But I still may want to go earlier next year. 😉
