Coney Island Sand Sculpture Contest – 2024

It’s been a while since I last checked out the sand sculpture contest at Coney Island, so I made a note of it on my calendar this year.

Then I kept my fingers crossed for good weather.

As it turned out the weather was ok.

But the forecast called for rain, and we did have a few sprinkles, so that probably cut down turnout a bit.

Luckily though there wasn’t a downpour until dusk.  Sadly, it probably destroyed everyone’s hard work.

They always invite a couple of pros and give them a front row seat, to make sure fans have something to see.

But families get into the act too.

I had to tease this guy who sat there the entire time watching his girlfriend do all the work.  But I guess it never hurts to bring along a fan for encouragement.

This was the only castle I spotted.

I think this was a sea gull in progress – Jonathan Livingston I presume. 😊

Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

Three Anniversary bouquets

Wednesday was our 37th wedding anniversary.

To mark the occasion, Edward decided to gift me with flowers – many flowers.

When I woke up in the morning it was to this lovely sight.

Because I prefer a limited color palette, when I put the flowers into vases, I rearranged them a bit.

Then I put the orange/purple bouquet in the living room

The orange roses were definitely the stars of the show.

The pretty light pink roses and baby’s breath were perfect for the bedroom.

I put all the lilies in one arrangement because they will keep blooming long after the other flowers have died.

And I placed them on the counter between the kitchen and living room because they smell great when you walk past them.

Did I mention that I got some really fabulous photos too?

Breaking in Times Square

The Olympics in Paris are wrapping up.

They had a new event this year – Breaking.

Apparently while it started in the Bronx it is now a world-wide phenomenon.

Proof positive – the gold medals were won by Phil Wizard from Canada and Ami from Japan.

Yes, they use their stage names when they compete.  How cool is that?

Victor for the U.S. did score a bronze medal.  Hats off to him.

I thought in honor of the occasion I would post a set of pics of some breakers in Times Square.

I lucked out and was close enough to both see and photograph them, and the crowds they attracted.

During the competition the announcers explained that one of the goals of the sport is to make sure that every pose they make is beautiful so that if you took a flash-freeze photo at any time it would look picturesque.

No wonder I love watching them.

My brother’s Lego

My brother Ken and I were Lego kids.

I am a free form user.  This is my last build – a condo with a rocking backyard created with my great nephew Spencer.

My brother on the other hand likes sets.

He has built so many now that he has a Lego room.  How cool is that?

Some of the sets are of specific places – like the Taj Mahal

and the London Bridge.

There are a couple of castles of course.

And a roller coaster.

But mostly there are streets of adorable buildings with cool little details. Checkout the fire hydrant. 😉

You could spend hours just looking at them.

But who has the patience for that – never mind actually building them in the first place?

Not to mention the fact that if I tried, I would probably manage to lose some of the key pieces along the way.

So, hats off to Ken.  (This is his current project.)

May he live long and build more, because you can never have too much Lego!!!
